May 17 Backlog part 3Almost up to date. Dissertation: Recently (ish) I completed my dissertation. Due to the fact that I’m lazy with blog up-dates and the fact that hand in date was the 1st of May I use to term ish at it’s furthest extend. The reason it makes it into my blog it two fold. 1) it’s an important part of the final year of my course. 2) it sums up the ‘difficulty’ I’ve had through out my final year. Namely that I have not felt the “panic” at all for the last year. Although I admit it is not the best tactic it has often come down that I’ll get uncomfortably close to the deadline for a piece of work and thus feel the “panic” and suddenly focus whole-heartedly on the subject at hand thus completing it. Throughout my final year I have not felt this “panic”, part of this may be due to the general lack of course work but either way it’s felt strange to me all the way through. The panic even failed to raise it’s head during my work on the dissertation. Whilst I did still manage to find focus on it, it wasn’t in the same category as the “panic”. This may be good after all but it’s unusual for me so I don’t entirely trust it as yet. Only time will tell really at this point… QOTD: GLaDOS: There was even going to be a party for you. A big party, that all your friends were invited to. I invited your best friend, the Companion Cube. Of course, he couldn't come because you murdered him. All your other friends couldn't come either, because you don't have any other friends, because of how unlikable you are. It says so right here in your personnel file: "Unlikable. Liked by no one. A bitter, unlikable loner, whose passing shall not be mourned." Shall NOT be mourned. That's exactly what it says. Very formal. Very official. It also says you were adopted, so that's funny, too. February 11 Democracy re-born at Essex
I saw this (a bit late by the wording of it but I don't remember spotting it before) and thought I was going to be sick. Though that could just be the bottle of wine... ---EDIT--- it turns out it was posted yesterday (10th Feb) although at one point it says 'Last night proved this'. Petty complaint but if you're busy and can't post it when you intend I personally find (having missed many blog deadlines) that editing the text slightly doesn't cost too much. QOTD: Robin: Yeah, it's the end of the world. But so what? We're still here, still fighting, still friends. February 09 General MeetingLast Thursday (5th) I went to my first ever General Meeting in my time here at Essex University. I then proceeded to interrupt two people as they enjoyed themselves at Alternative night with one question. "Is it normally like that or was that uniquely horrible?". As I expected (as would anyone else who was also there for the first time) the answer was the latter. It's too much like hard work (and somewhat sickening) to try to recount the events of the general meeting so I'm going to try and describe in single words my thought at various points during the meeting and why: Boredom - not the first one you'd expect but yes. For portions of it I was just bored out of my skull. This was mainly around the Gaza issues where it was just the same speeches they'd given over two weeks ago. You'd have thought in that time they'd have at least been smart enough to reword things, if not come up with new arguments and concessions for the 'opposition' group. Amusement - yes, some of the arguments just seemed ridiculous and left me feeling amused. For example the claim that putting up the Union Jack is a reminder of colonialism. Personally I didn't realise you could colonise your own country but now that I've been informed I will have to work it into my plans for world domination. Another example was when it was suggested that instead of the Union Jack flag we should put up flags of all nations. I was so very tempted to comment on that asking if they'd be happy to have the national flags of Zimbabwe, the Peoples' Republic and the Republic of China, and most importantly Israel. It wouldn't have helped the situation at all but it amused me greatly. A final example of the amusement was when someone tried to argue that the SU wasn't trying to support one side or the other in the Gaza conflict just oppose the killings (or something to that effect). This may be what the and protesters wish. However, the motion being debated had as it's first point under resolutions "To call for an immediate end lifting of the siege, and to support the broadly-based demonstrations demanding an end to the attacks and the lifting of the siege". Seems there's some confusion somewhere (may just be me). Disgust - indeed. Most would assume this was over the results of the various votes and I'll admit that I'm not pleased with most of them. However, my disgust if precious and saved only for special occasions. This occasion is when a argument broke out towards the end of the meeting resulting in one voter threatening to punch another. The fact that someone is stupid enough to think that this is an appropriate response during a democratic meeting is bad enough but my disgust is more over the fact that the aggressor wasn't thrown out on his arse immediately after this. It has been pointed out to me that there probably wasn't anyone legally able to remove someone from the room but the alternative was at least a dozen people pilling in from both sides to 'settle' the dispute. However, credit where it's due. The VP Education is a very good orator and nearly talked me round to voting yes for the new constitution. But only nearly as I still stuck up my hand for no and make sure to stare straight into the eyes of any Saab who appeared to look back at me (petty as that is). I'm too tired to continue ranting right now so I'm just going to post this (as it's already pushing it's relevance being 3 days late). I'll be randomly tagging anyone I spotted at the GM I'm friends with on the facebook version of this. I just leave one final thought (hopefully you can read it):
For those no longer at university who might read this there's a list of motions discussed at the latest GM (whilst it lasts, will need to remember to update the link): http://www.essexstudent.com/your_union/gm/ QOTD: John Crichton: If he masters wormhole technology, what will he use it for? January 18 The January revolutionI still feel slightly bad to be resurrecting my blog just because of this post (seems much to stereotypical, 'I don't like that... to the Internet to complaint!') but it's happening anyway as it seems a fairly drastic event on campus and I suspect will have a long series of after affects (never know, might keep me blogging this time). To start with I'll try and set the scene. At the last student elections on campus a group called 'viva essex' (basically a bunch of commies in my opinion but I only gave a quick glance over the elections before making my decisions) achieved a clean victory with all 5 of their members winning their positions. I voted against them all the way but fair do's to them they gained the popular support and won. They started the job some time over the summer 2008 but for me weren't noticed until the start of this academic year which is when things started going wrong. The current sabbs seem highly politically motivated (but not overly politically savvy as it's been put) which you might argue is good but they're following their own personal interests seemingly exclusively. Before I go further I'm going to draw attention to 'seemingly'. Given that very few people will read this and I know them I won't waste their time with a definition of the word. I say seemingly as for the most part I have no interest in what they're up to unless it effects me, unfortunately I feel this year most things they seem to have done have effected me in some way or another. Possibly I'm just growing up and generally showing an interest or they are interacting (interfering, whichever you prefer) with the average student life. Equally, to my opinion they seem to be wasting a lot of time on international issues of little or no concern to the majority of the student body which is what current events are concerning. I could go on and go but 3 months is a bit of a pain to cover and detracts from current events. I didn't witness these events myself so advise these notes by Mat specifically for a view of what happened and a good read (The SU: How did it come to this? and Kavakeb: What he said vs What he meant). In short they've brought the university to the brink of a civil war (for lack of a better term) and I still haven't worked out the most defensible position on campus once the fighting breaks out. Now the protesters are perfectly free to have their opinions and protest though I really would prefer it if they didn't or at least thought through what they were doing and picked a better strategy rather interfere with lessons and piss off a lot of people (though it gives me hope that we're finally going to witness the counter-attack against the commies/socialists which seem to have taken over the majority of campus' across the country). However, just because they have a right to do this doesn't mean I'm going to happily stand aside and let them (despite how apathetic I generally am to causes on campus). I half hope they try something stupid like putting up a picket line in front of the lecture theatre building (which they're currently 'occupying'/'squatting' in over the weekend though never word really describes what they're doing as they booked it out) which I can then run and I have no problems with forcibly barging my way past these people even though I know it'll just make matters worse. All this is once again encouraging me to consider running in the up coming elections. However, I fear that despite the best efforts of the SU they still haven't raised my selling point sufficiently high to have a chance of winning (equally there's still the risk of some of them winning and I might find myself winning and being required to work with 4 people I don't agree with). As a parting question (for now) I'm still wondering whether those who are arguing against the SU and these recent protests count as revolutionaries or counter-revolutionaries due to the SU's own stance. The leaning seems to be towards the former in which case the SU should be dropping to their knees and worshiping us as we are what they appear to idealise most. QOTD: 'I do the jokes,' snapped Varl. 'Yeah, why is that?' asked Laydlly. 'Because... I'll shoot you,' said Varl. May 19 FirstsYesterday held a series of firsts of me, none of which are particularly important or interesting but I'm going to mention them anyway to pad out this blog. The first first (should have thought this through better) was that I left my exam early for psychology (largley because I found it quite easy and was feeling confident) hadn't done that before so it seemed unique to me. The second first was that I had the first meal not cooked by myself this term for lunch (simple burger and chips in the bar). The final first was for the first time since coming to university I ordered a take-away (dominos to be specific, hadn't had one in about a year and got a discount). Such a fun and exciting life I live in during my exams.
Well that's out of the way now. As I promised I will now talk about the society guild awards that happened last night. Unfortunately I wasn't actually there so I can't really comment on the evening though I've heard good things (like members of the SU having nice chats with our people there and being friendly as strange as it sounds. Oh and lots of wine). However, I can comment on the nomination process, for us at least, I'm sure it went better for other societies.
Our first knowledge of the night was when one of our members got bored and started scanning the term planner for upcoming events, this was roughly two to three weeks ago at which point I remembered someone had been to a meeting where this was mentioned so asked him if he could remember any details. Unfortunately he couldn't so offered to e-mail the SU to find out. Surprisingly they didn't response (a true shock I know). Eventually it was brought up again at the committee meeting last Monday (the 14th with the event happening the 18th) and the next day I e-mailed the SU again to find out what was happening. Against all known laws of nature, two minutes later I got a response saying that if I could get the nominations in by the end of the day we could still be considered (nominations were meant to have been entered by the 5th). After some hurried work by me and ASP we quickly filled out nominations for society of the year, most improved society and a society commendation for ASP himself and sent them back about half an hour before the end of the SU's day.
Next we waited. And continued to wait without hearding anything further until Thursday when ASP e-mailed to confirm where the venue was as it hadn't been announced before. At that point we heard that we may have been shortlisted for an award and our hoped rose. Next the entire student body heard that we'd managed to make it onto the shortlist for both society of the year and most improved society (even if they didn't quite get our name right).
Finally as a result last night not only did ASP get his personal commendation (well, and IOU one certificate but it's a start) but as a society we also got most improved. Just have to make sure we get Society of the Year next year, and that I go to enjoy the large amounts of wine I've heard of.
At the bottom is the first in a series of comics over my next few blogs stolen from Penny Arcade, nice story line but some references may be lost if you don't know the characters so I recommend reading all of their comics some time, it's good.

May 18 Revision is funCan't really say much, still got two exams to go and tomorrow will be my most painful. Will start blogging properly from Tuesday hopefully.
Though I will quickly mention (possibly a follow up tomorrow evening or Sunday) that the LINKS society managed to get onto the short list for Most Improved Society and Society of the year (the second one being largely me making it up with proof reading and suggestions to guide me) despise sending in our nominations 10 days late. The awards evening is happening at the moment so if I'm lucky there'll be some good news in about two hours.
{additional, turns out we won most improved society (I was hoping for society of the year) and one member got a commendation, will try to blog more fully tomorrow}
QOTD:
Anything built before you’re 15 is how things are meant to be. Anything invented between when you’re 15 – 25 is new and exciting and you can probably get a career in it. Anything after this is wrong and against the natural order of things. April 25 HistoryFirst of my short complaint blogs, here goes...
As the title suggests I currently annoyed by history. However, understand that I personally find history in and of itself (<-- complicated language for no apparent reason) quite interesting and on occasion I have done unnessary research into an area after hearing of something related to it. My complaint meanwhile is levelled at history as a subject. I'm taking one module of a first year course at the moment (I'm sure it's better if you do more of it or above first year but I'm basing this on what I know) and it annoys me (surprise...)
Probably the biggest problem with it is that there is too much history (the world has been around a while now) for the time allotted for the course. And this is just making of the modern world, about a max of two centuries. This leaves roguhly an hour and a half to two hours to each topic within the module, such as the first world war, the second world war, the french revolution. I know that you're expected to do a lot of your own study but that still seems like too little basing for me.
Of course I'm mainly in a bad mood today because I had to drag every last word out for the essay I submitted earlier (I think I did in fact make a few words up that aren't in the dictionary just to get the word count in the end). It irritated me.
Anyway that sums it up for now, wonder what will irritate me next...
QOTD:
Calculon - That was so terrible I think you gave me cancer! February 16 SU ElectionsYesterday and Wednesday were the SU elections at Essex for the Saab (basically the top 5) positions as most who read this blog will know.
Personally I really couldn't have cared less about who successfully sold their soul to become part of the SU executive committee but seeing as I'm currently under threat of taking a certain position in St John next year which may involve having to meet with several of these people a few times I thought I should do it and but some form of thought into it (however I did cure myself of the shame of having voted by having a third of a bottle of red wine with my dinner).
Unfortunately in voting RON (re-open nominations) still did fairly well for me. Beating most nominees and even coming top in the running for vice-president sports and societies (one that I am pretty much guaranteed to have to see some time next year). Though to be fair we did have people marked down a neo-feminist, communist and student respect running for the position of President (for a laugh I looked at the student respect mainfesto, first line was a history of the Iraq war so I just closed it and put them bottom of my list of preferences).
Once I'd finished all this and the bottle of wine I thought it was over and I'd be safe. However I was sadly mistaken. About 8ish at a guess there was a heavy knocking at the door to my flat. I ignored it as always as my flat mates often have friends round (who don't seem capable of calling up my flatmates and my flatmates seem incapable of hearing even though I'm the furtherest from the door). About 8.30 I then left my room for a drink only to discover two people sitting on the stairs outside my flat waiting for someone to appear. Turns out they were just lackies of one of the groups that had gotten together to run (Super Students to be specific) who of course asked me if I'd voted, who I'd voted for and to whether my flat mates had voted. Being a kind hearted soul I claimed my flat was out but would encourage them to vote if I saw them in time then promptly shut the door (noting as I did that one of the two lackies when back to sitting on the stairs staking out my flat).
Finally 9 o'clock came when the polls closed and they were appearently announcing the results in the SU bar so I knew I was free from pestering (at least for a few weeks). On the subject of results though I heard that some how they managed to mess it up so by about 11.30 they still hadn't announced any results. How they messed up is completely beyond me seeing as all the voting was done on-line so the computers would have been able to give a result less than a second after the polls close. But then again its the SU and I need to learn to expect the stupid and idiotic.
As it happens I still haven't heard all the results. Just heard about two people from others who had there from others still. SU hasn't even bothered e-mailing round (which they did all of yesterday with a running count down. Another entertaining thing as I got the 1 hour warning 10 minutes after the polls closed.
QOTD: Max Stone - A leader needs funny catch phrases, like 'take it to the max' and 'monkey banana raffle'. January 14 The ReturnSo I returned to uni last night, got every thing unpacked and organised and not a lot else. Now onto the fun stuff. Two solid days of revision followed by 4 days of finishing off my second lab report (which seems to be getting worse everytime I look at it). Surprisingly enough I've found myself feeling very bored for much of the day but feel that I've done fairly well in ignoring distractions, only watched one episode of Stargate Atlantis and haven't played any computer games yet (though I may do soon, I feel a growing need to confront the evil demonic girl and her electric monkeys in F.E.A.R).
Just a quick follow up from my previous blog. The battle with the laptop resulted in microsoft word and such like being installed (or alternative versions in the case of excel at least) but the digital tv is a job to be left to either my Dad or my Brother. Or possibly me in around two and a half months. One thing I did forget I realised was to set-up the windows messenger on it for the account I created my Dad so for now he'll have to continue sharing my Mum's.
Oh and just to clarify, the title of my previously blog was less to do with the tasks I was being set and more to do with the fact that I found one of the songs from the original Command and Conquer game (Target aka The Mechanical Man by Frank Klepacki, a song I always liked to hear though I can't remember why any more) |
